After picking you up at your centrally located Shanghai hotel, you drive to the outskirts of Shanghai to the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao. According to archaeological discovery, Zhujiajiao can be traced back to neolithic times. During the Ming and Qing dynasties (roughly 1350-1900) Zhujiajiao was celebrated for its cloth and rice industries and a trade hub in the Yangtze Delta. Rows upon rows of stores, firms, wine-shops and tea houses were erected with peddlers and vendors pouring into the streets and hundreds of ships swarming the wharves. Nowadays there are still over 500 buildings from that period to be seen. Upon arrival you explore the Kezhi Garden, the largest manorial garden in town. The name Kezhi reflects on the wishes of the owner, Mr. Ma Wenqing, that his offspring shall learn farming as well as becoming a scholar. Scattered over the garden are more than 200 functional rooms as well as guests receiving halls for receiving guests of different social status. Furthermore you will discover an original Qing dynasty post office and farmacy as well as just soaking in the flair of this wonderful small town so full of history. Specialty lunch in the town as well as a ride in a traditional gondola can be easily arranged at your own expense.
