Description

This is a full-day panoramic tour of China’s own Venice, the water towns of "Zhouzhuang" and "Jinxi". On this small group tour, you will explore the ancient water town with your expert guide. You will visit Zhouzhuang, an ancient water town that comfortably makes CNN's list of the Top 10 most beautiful towns in the world. Board a gondola and see for yourself the hustle and bustle of life of the people living by the canals. Then, travel to the 2000 year old water town "Jinxi" which boasts 36 ancient bridges spanning the rivers. Jinxi Ancient Town is quieter, yet surprisingly more photogenic. The prime time to visit is in the afternoon, when the light is perfect for your photos and memories of the place.

On departure, enjoy pickup at your central Shanghai hotel between 8am and 8:30am. You will receive details about your driver, tour guide, and pickup in your voucher the day before.

Then, relax in your comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle on your journey to Zhouzhuang. This delightful water town offers up many old buildings and bridges, boat rides, and crafts, all framed by quaint water-town scenery.

Ride a gondola and observe the way of life of people living by the canals first hand. This medieval water town has a history dating back more than 900 years, and features houses and bridges built in both the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing dynasties (1644–1911).

Your tour covers three of the most representative houses of these periods, so you won’t leave without knowing their provenance and history.

Shen's House, southeast of Fu'an Bridge on Nanshi Street, was built it in 1742. The compound has seven courtyards, five archways, and more than 100 rooms, and covers an area of about a half an acre (2,000 meters). There is a gate and wharf for mooring boats.

Zhang's House lies south of the Twin Bridges on Beishi Street. It was built between 1436 and 1449 and also covers about half an acre (1,800 square meters). The house has six courtyards and more than 70 rooms. A square pool was built in the middle section. It is an important historical building.

Ye Chucang's Residence is situated on Xiwan Street and was the former home of poet and statesman Ye Chucang (1887–1946). He was known for organizing a group of young people to campaign against gambling and opium. The house has five courtyards, a Main Hall that served as Ye Chucang’s studio, and a Rear Hall where he received friends.

Between 11:30am and 12:30pm, have a local lunch at a restaurant by the side of a waterway, heading up to the second floor for the best views of the water village.

Then, between 12:30pm and 5pm, enjoy a visit to Jinxi Ancient Water Town. Travel to this small, historical town, which is simpler, less sophisticated, and quieter than other similar ancient towns in China.

Complete with 16 lakes and 238 rivers, Jinxi features 36 ancient bridges across its waterways. The bridges represent various styles and were built during different periods in history. The town also offers many museums, including China’s first Antique Tiles and Bricks Museum, a Red Porcelain Products Museum, and a Tree Root Carving Museum.

After exploring each of these museums, return to Shanghai between 5pm and 6pm, and finish with a drop-off at your hotel. Your tour has no compulsory shopping stops, so there’s no wasted time visiting tourist shops or factories where the products can be over-priced.
